After 10 hour drive we arrived at Ashgabat the capital of Turkmenistan. We are now in a good hotel for two nights 🙂
With its lavish marble palaces, gleaming gold domes and vast expanses of manicured parkland, Ashgabat (‘the city of love’ in Arabic) has reinvented itself as a showcase city for the newly independent republic and is definitely one of Central Asia’s strangest places. Built almost entirely off the receipts of Turkmenistan’s oil and gas revenues with gleaming white marble monoliths springing up overnight like mushrooms.
This place is more like the old Soviet Union a very sterile place. Lots of white buildings, monuments and palaces. Palaces for everything even getting married… but where are the people? Scary!
Many of the women look very elegant in there long dresses and head scarves 🙂
